Freeing the imagination

Ian Cairns invites you to explore his vibrant Abstract Impressionist paintings. The works shown here are a selection of his current portfolio. They are a  personal expression of the beauty of the Lake District where he lives and the artist's reactions  to the landscape and the feelings that it evokes.  He finds inspiration in observing the myriad of different people from around the world who visit this mesmerising World Heritage Site and how they react to its beauty and unique charm.  A love of colour, the interplay of light, extreme weather and the  sheer joy of watching people having fun, living and loving here underpin Ian's  work.

Rich, imaginative colour palette

Each  painting is  created with a  vibrant abstract palette which  reflects the artist's reaction to the landscape. Realism is replaced by tonal contrasts and evocative  colour combinations .

Strong emotions stirred by nature's beauty

Technique meets expression

Through a combination of traditional techniques in oil painting, creative layering and a free use of brush and palette knife, Ian brings texture and depth that  reflects his energy and love of movement in his  work.

The paintings featured here are all oil on canvas - 40cm x 30cm stretched canvas panels.

Personal interpretations

Every painting is perceived differently by different people. Interesting and amusing  interpretations flow and the artist always  enjoys hearing the ways that his abstract landscapes connect on a personal level.

Style                                                                                                                                                                       Ian loves the freedom and creativity that an Abstract Impressionist style of painting allows. His body of work includes numerous large-scale pure Abstract canvasses, Impressionist landscapes of scenes including Norfolk, Scotland, Switzerland and France.

In the portfolio paintings featured here he uses recognisable Lake District locations for his flights of imagination. The figures that inhabit his paintings are inspired by conversations overheard, people observed and feelings and emotions that this remarkable landscape evoke. The people that spark Ian's imagination bring a humanity and sense of the joy of living in this glorious part of the world.
